The Merchant Hotel, Belfast
The 25ft real Christmas tree in The Great Room attracted a huge deal of attention and was declared to be more impressive than the tree outside Belfast City Hall!
What we did
Oh the beautiful and inimitable Merchant Hotel is so opulent in its own right that the Christmas decorations were going to have to be VERY classy indeed! The original Victorian interiors would suit an abundance of natural green pine, cones, berries, holly, traditional red poinsettia and huge, dramatic Amaryllis. We gathered fabric, ribbon and trims of red or gold velvet and a fine collection of hanging gold cherubs, over-sized baubles and grapes to mirror the incredible decorative plaster work of the ceiling in the Great Room. We dressed the grand dining area, all the many varied bars each according to their own style with real trees, fairylit garlands and large pine and Amaryllis arrangements.
Staircases, railings, mantlepieces and occasional furniture were decked with either beautiful arrangements, wreaths or gold trees with baubles. By contrast, the High Street extension is a contemporary ode to Art Deco and provided us with a change of tempo. The colour palette was based on a mix of pearl whites, pale gold and soft copper. Decorations were chosen to emulate the period and for their whimsical or ethereal quality. We decorated the reception, the Spa,and the glorious Rita Duffy Suite. In these areas we used ice white fairylights, etched glass baubles, white birch sprigs, shimmering iridescent ferns, and even a crop of frosted cabbages!
